VirtualBox - Install CentOS Stream 9
Launch VirtualBox.
For instructions to download CentOS Stream 9 see CentOS Stream 9 - Download.
The CentOS Stream 9 dvd1 ISO can be used as is from the CentOS website for installation.
There is no need to create a bootable USB.
Step 1 - Create a new virtual machine
Select New.
Provide a name for the new virtual machine.
Set the memory size, as much as your system allows without going beyond the green section.
Click the Next button.
With Create a virtual hard disk now selected, click the Create button.
With VDI (Virtual Disk Image) selected, click the Next button.
With Dynamically allocated selected, click the Next button.
Leave the name of the hard disk as populated.
Select the hard disk size (recommended is 20 GB to 30 GB).
Click the Create button.
You will be returned to the VirtualBox Manager, now displaying the newly created machine.
Step 2 - Adjust the machine settings
With the newly created machine selected, select Settings.
Select System.
Ensure the Motherboard tab is selected.
In the centre, untick Floppy and click on the down arrow to move Floppy to below Hard Disk.
Ensure Optical is now at the top of the list followed by Hard Disk.
Click the OK button.
Set the Processor(s): to a desired setting within the green section.
Under the headng Storage Devices select Empty under Controller: IDE.
In the right pane to the right of Optical Drive click on the CD/DVD icon.
Select Choose a disk file...
Navigate to the downloaded ISO.
Select the ISO and click the Open button.
Click the OK button.
The new machine is now ready to run for the first time.
Step 4 - Installing CentOS Stream 9
With the new CentOS machine selected, click the green Start arrow. Either hit the Enter key or wait a bit and CentOS will start loading.
If the message in the next image displays, click the Capture button.
To return to using the mouse outside the virtual machine window, press and release the right Ctrl key.
Select your preferred language and click the Continue button.
Select Root Password.
Enter a password for root and at the top left click on the Done button.
Sometimes there is no check mark next to the icon under the Local Standard Disks
(As shown in the next image)
Select the disk icon again so that a check mark appears next to it as shown below.
Select the Done button top left.
There should now be no remaining yellow triangles with exclamations marks.
Scroll down slightly and select User Creation.
Enter a name for the user.
If this user is to be an administrator, place a check mark against Make this user administrator.
Click on the Done button.
Select the Begin Installation button.
Once the installation is complete click on the Reboot System button.
You will now be able to sign in, select the name of the user.
Step 5 - Change boot order
Alter the boot order so that the Hard Disk is set to boot first.
From the VirtualBox Manager select Settings.
Select System.
Select the Hard Disk in the list and by using the arrow buttons, move it to the top of the list.
CentOS is now ready to be used.
